Read cover, water, imagery history and change

Use the wider layer catalog to ask better questions about a scouting area.

Where to start in the appLayers → Habitat & Vegetation, Water & Wetlands or Fire & Conditions
  1. 01

    Compare cover types

Use Land Cover and Crop & Field Cover to compare forest, open ground, agriculture and wetlands. Canopy & Openings helps explore cover structure. Read each legend before interpreting its colors.

  2. 02

    Follow water and wet ground

Add Hydrography for mapped rivers, streams and water bodies. Wetlands adds wetland and deepwater reference areas. Compare those records with imagery; seasonal conditions can differ.

  3. 03

    Study how a place changed

Use Aerial History, PA HD Aerial / Leaf-Off, USGS Imagery or Recent Satellite where available. Check the acquisition date and source resolution. Recent regional satellite imagery is different from high-resolution aerial photography.

  4. 04

    Check forest and fire context

Recent Forest Change highlights detected changes. Active Wildfires shows reported incident perimeters. Read the dates and limitations; these do not replace current closure notices, evacuation information or agency updates.

  5. 05

Save the question, not a certainty

Mark a feature worth scouting and note which source and date led you there. Field-check current cover, water and access before relying on an interpretation.
